Why Just 1 Pilates Session Per Week is Perfect
What is the perfect way to begin your own Pilates personal practice to achieve the best results when starting a Pilates routine?
We like to help our clients move into their new mobility health journey with high expectations and a good initial plan. The start is the most important part, and if you overdo it, you risk experiencing over-commitment. In your already busy life this unnecessary pressure may outweigh the potential benefits of this life changing activity.
This dynamic workshop focused on more than just hip movements. We delved into the interconnectedness of our entire body, understanding that nothing operates in isolation. Our Pilates Can Hip Health philosophy revolves around addressing the full body, a principle deeply ingrained in the Clinical Pilates approach.
Pilates is a journey of self-discovery, and our workshop reflected this. From the pelvis and sacrum to the feet and ankles, every part plays a crucial role in hip health. We emphasized the role of the diaphragm in breathing, underscoring the holistic nature of our exploration.
Building an ‘Excellent Pilates Exercise Habit’ is the key to long-term success and Pilates consistency.
When building you should start with a great foundation. We always start new clients with the foundation of a couple of 1-hour private Pilates sessions, so we can really get to know their body, what they are trying to achieve, and therefore how best to help them. The very practical outcome from the 2 private sessions will be a personalised written program. Written by the private instructor, this highly personalised program will allow any of our studio instructors to know precisely how best to assist you in our semi-private sessions.
Those semi-private instructors can refer to your personalised program during semi-private sessions, using it as a highly informed plan for each session. I say “plan” because that plan can change from session to session depending on how you present in your semi-private session. Perhaps you have progressed and are ready for more challenge. Or perhaps you have had a setback and so we should regress your intensity or provide more appropriate options.
Semi-private Pilates sessions are the best way that we have found, (in over 25 years of operating), of providing highly personalised Pilates training services, cost effectively. The emphasis is on “effectively”, as the small group environment provides both a social and a team dynamic. The clients are all there to improve mobility and strength, but are also happy to be part of a social and encouraging team dynamic with the other clients and the instructor.
While we also advocate for the transformative power, at some later stage, of two or three sessions per week, at Pilates Can, we always recommend that our brand-new clients start with just one session per week. We understand that beginning any new journey can feel daunting. Our primary goal is to get you moving, but it’s also to ensure your “moving experience” is sustainable and ultimately rewarding. Therefore, we recommend avoiding overwhelm.
By starting with a single weekly session, you can seamlessly integrate Pilates into your existing, probably already busy lifestyle. It gives you the space to truly enjoy the discovery of new movement patterns, without the extra weight of time-pressure. Most of our clients do follow this single session per week starting cadence, including those with some of the most difficult of conditions like those experienced by now long term and highly successful client Rae Harvey.
Why the "Slow Start" Matters:
We’ve found that removing the "all or nothing" pressure builds a foundation of genuine enjoyment and supports a sustainable Pilates practice. This makes the eventual transition to two or three sessions feel like a natural, motivated next step in your wellness journey, rather than just another item on a "to-do" list.
But if you decide to stick with just one session per week, that is also fine, and you will continue to benefit. That transition to more than 1 session per week is not for everyone. It is a very personal decision. True transformation happens when you build a foundation that allows your body, mind and emotions, all to thrive.
Check our blog article page next week for my next article, regarding that transition to multiple Pilates sessions per week. And if you are looking to do more than 1 semi-private session per week, because you…

If you don’t see any sessions on there that suit you, we also have a very effective waitlist system to help our newer clients eventually get into their perfect session times. If you are unsure of how to use your app for that waitlist process, please contact us via this page.
We didn't stop at the studio, as our clients need to be equipped with practical exercises to strengthen their hips at home.
